Baggage Car 1755

This car was built in 1954 originally as a 44-seat coach, known as Southern Pacific 2366. After serving mostly on the SP’s Sunset Limited, this car would pass into Amtrak ownership in 1971 as no. 4429, later being equipped with Head End Power (HEP) and renumbered to 4020 in May 1981. By the mid 90s though, Amtrak’s Heritage Fleet was being superseded by newer equipment, and several baggage cars were being withdrawn from service because of flailing reliability. With the 4020 within a surplus pool of cars going against an approaching baggage car shortage, the car would be internally gutted of its passenger amenities, and fitted with a center roll up door to carry baggage and US Mail. The rechristened AMTK 1727 emerged from the shops in January of 1997, and would serve the entire Amtrak network. The later renumbered 1755 was last used by Amtrak in 2015 after taking some damage, and was sidelined until being purchased by TCRM in 2018.
