TCRX 901 “Silver Chest”
“Silver Chest” is the oldest car in our excursion fleet, built in 1940 by the Budd Company. First identified as Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad No. 901, the Silver Chest was in pool service for the railroad’s Zephyr streamliners; meaning it could be used on a train anywhere on the CB&Q’s network whether it was in Chicago, Minneapolis/ St. Paul, Denver, Dallas, or Houston. Silver Chest would go through many renumberings during its career with CB&Q as 1000, and later as Amtrak 10090. TCRM would purchase this car in 2007, and fit two Cummins Genset generators inside the old baggage space. This car is the dedicated power source for our train’s Head End Power (HEP), which uses 480 volts of electricity to power the lights, heating or air conditioning, making your ride comfortable whatever the weather. Silver Chest has been in service with us since 2012.
