TCRX 8510

Built in November 1948 by the Budd Company, CB&Q 193 “Silver Cafe” was one of dozens of cars built for the transcontinental streamliner California Zephyr. Operating between Chicago, IL and Oakland, CA across three separate railroads, Silver Cafe could seat 48 patrons in all for the best breakfast, lunch and dining service the three railroads could offer. Following the Zephyr’s discontinuance in 1970, Silver Cafe would eventually pass into Amtrak ownership, and fulfill its same purpose throughout Amtrak’s national network, extensively modified from its original configuration to meet the demands of the modern traveler. After a long and illustrious career, the car was last seen in revenue service in June 2017 before being sent to the company’s shops in Beech Grove, IN for disposition. When the remaining heritage fleet cars were placed at auction in late 2018, TCRM made a successful bid on 8510, which was delivered in October 2019. With only some minor cosmetic touch ups, including restoring the Silver Cafe name, 8510 is the newest car in our fleet.
