TCRX 8519
Originally built as New York Central Railroad Diner/Grill number 450, this 44-seat dining car was built by the Budd Co. in 1948. Providing meal service on the NYC’s Great Steel Fleet, and even outlasting it through the Penn Central (PC #4550) merger and Amtrak nationalization. Under Amtrak’s operation the car would be renumbered in 1971 to 8330. In 1981 Amtrak converted the car to a standard diner, increased the seating to 48 and added Head End Power that allowed for more efficient heating and cooling of the car. The car’s illustrious fifty plus year career abruptly came to an end on May 6th, 2003 in Hinesville, GA, when Amtrak’s Silver Star collided with a tractor trailer, and derailed on impact. 8519 was retired shortly thereafter, and resided at the company’s shops in Beech Grove, IN until being purchased by TCRM in early 2007. With minor repairs made, the car entered service on our trains the following year and has run faithfully ever sense.
This car is available for Regular Seating!
